Hitherfield School > About Hitherfield

Our Story

Founded in 1991, by Ann and Brian Scott, Hitherfield School was established to provide a nurturing and safe environment where children can develop into confident, independent learners. For over three decades, our school has been a cornerstone of the community, offering exceptional education and fostering lifelong relationships between students, families, and educators. Today, their family continues to ensure their legacy and maintain the key principles that make their vision truly special.

Our Philosophy

At Hitherfield, we believe optimal learning occurs when children are happy, engaged, and challenged. Our approach combines rigorous academics with individualized attention, encouraging curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity. We instill core values such as respect, perseverance, responsibility and empathy, preparing students to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Hitherfield's Principle

Hitherfield School welcomes students regardless of race, gender, national and ethnic origin, and is non-discriminatory in all our policies.

Keys to Success

Our individualized programming engages and supports each child’s unique learning style and nurtures their strengths while accommodating their challenges. A fantastic array of enrichment programs and a focus on developing confidence, decision-making and respect on top a strong academic foundation result in happy, independent learners with skills & knowledge they need to flourish.

What Makes Us Unique

  • Personalized Learning: Our small class sizes (average of 14 students) allow us to tailor education to each child’s unique strengths and challenges.
  • Leadership Opportunities: From roles like House Captain and Bus Monitor to club leadership, students develop skills that build confidence and responsibility.
  • Creative Arts Programs: Students engage in enriching music and arts activities, such as annual plays and music lessons, that foster creativity, collaboration, and self-expression.
  • Outdoor Education & Physical Activities: Our campus, complete with an on-site pond and green spaces, supports activities like cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, swimming lessons, and more, promoting physical and mental well-being.

Graduation Stages

Preschool & Kindergarten: Our youngest learners thrive in a hybrid play-based/traditional program with an emphasis on foundational skills like reading, art, and basic math. By Grade 1, foundations are set for students to be confident readers, ready to explore more advanced subjects.

Lower Schools (Grades 1 through 4): Students build on their foundational skills with an enriched curriculum that includes music, arts, and diverse physical activities.

Upper School (Grades 5 through 8): By Grade 8, students have continued their learning while introducing fundamental leadership skills, healthy study habits and key responsibility/self-help skills that have prepared them to transition smoothly to high school, equipped with confidence and resilience.
